Rough Surface Contact Modelling—A Review

چکیده
It has been shown experimentally that boundary friction is proportional to load (commonly known as Amontons’ law) for more than 500 years, and the fact it holds true over many scales (from microns kilometres, from nano-Newtons Mega-Newtons) materials which deform both elastically plastically subject of much research, in order fully understand its wide applicability (and also find any deviations law). Attempts explain law recognise real surfaces are rough; such, researchers have studied contact rough under elastic plastic deformation conditions. As focus on energy efficiency ever increasing, machines now being used with lower-viscosity lubricants, operating at higher loads temperatures, such oil films separating moving becoming thinner, there a greater chance mixed/boundary lubrication occurring. Because occurs when two come into contact, thought timely review this topic current state theoretical experimental understanding rough-surface prediction regime.

Surface separation and contact resistance considering sinusoidal elastic–plastic multi-scale rough surface contact
The current work considers the multi-scale nature of surface roughness in a new model that predicts the real area of contact and surface separation as functions of load. This work is based upon a previous rough surfacemulti-scale contactmodelwhichused stackedelastic–plastic spheres tomodel themultiple scales of roughness. Instead, this work uses stacked 3D sinusoids to represent the asperities ...
متن کاملElastic-plastic Contact of a Rough Surface with Weierstrass Profile
In this appendix, we list the expressions that characterize the response of an elastic-perfectly plastic solid with sinusoidal roughness to indentation by a rigid flat punch. The substrate is an elastic-perfectly plastic solid with Young’s modulus E, Poisson’s ratio ν and yield stress Y σ . The surface roughness has wavelength n λ and amplitude n g . In terms of these parameters, we define a ma...

Stiction is a major failure mode in microelectromechanical systems MEMS . Undesirable stiction, which results from contact between surfaces, threatens the reliability of MEMS severely as it breaks the actuation function of MEMS switches, for example. Although it may be possible to avoid stiction by increasing restoring forces using high spring constants, it follows that the actuation voltage ha...
متن کاملContact between representative rough surfaces.
A numerical analysis of mechanical frictionless contact between rough self-affine elastic manifolds was carried out. It is shown that the lower cutoff wave number in surface spectra is a key parameter controlling the representativity of the numerical model. Using this notion we demonstrate that for representative surfaces the evolution of the real contact area with load is universal and indepen...
متن کاملContact stiffness of randomly rough surfaces
We investigate the contact stiffness of an elastic half-space and a rigid indenter with randomly rough surface having a power spectrum C2D(q)proportional q(-2H-2), where q is the wave vector. The range of H[symbol: see text] is studied covering a wide range of roughness types from white noise to smooth single asperities. At low forces, the contact stiffness is in all cases a power law function ...
